Get Drunk Not Fat

Get Drunk Not Fat

Sure, there is a time and place for a robust beer belly, but as summer rolls around, it’s difficult to manage drinking a six-pack without losing your six-pack.  Alternatively, if your mission is to lose weight, you don’t have to rule out beer or liquor completely.  Instead, drink smart by picking the right alcoholic drinks that get you drunk rather than fat.

The idea is to consume alcoholic drinks with a high percentage of alcohol that is low on calories and carbohydrates.  Your body will need to consume less calories and carbohydrates in order to achieve a proper buzz.  Since weight is directly proportional to the amount of calories you take in versus the amount of calories you expend through energy, you can regulate your drinking habits but won’t have to avoid alcohol altogether in order to lose weight or maintain your weight.

Less Calories, More Alcohol

The website Get Drunk Not Fat has compiled an extensive list of alcoholic drinks that includes everything from beer to wine and vodka to whiskey.  The list ranks and grades each alcoholic drink on a scale from A+ to F- that takes into account alcohol percentage and calories, but also lists carbohydrates.  All drinks are graded on one serving size.  The list is searchable and customizable, so you are able to search just “beers” and rank them in order of “calories” or “alcohol” alone instead of the default “calories from alcohol” grading method.

There’s also a drinking calculator on the website which allows you to pick a drink, enter your sex, body weight, the total number of drinks consumed, the time in which the drinks were consumed.  It then calculates your blood alcohol content (BAC) as well as the total number of calories and carbohydrates consumed.

Here’s an example of some of the best and worst drinks:

Best Beers by Calories from Alcohol

  1. Natural Ice
  2. King Cobra
  3. Molson Canadian 67
  4. Pig’s Eye Lean Light
  5. Sleeman Clear
  6. Michelob Ultra
  7. Natural Light
  8. Natty Daddy
  9. Hurricane
  10. Bud Light Platinum

Worst Beers by Calories from Alcohol

  1. Non-alcoholic beers (Kirin Free, O’Doul’s, Busch N/A, Sharp’s, Coors Non-Alcoholic)
  2. Bud Light Lime-A-Rita
  3. Tennents Sweetheart Stout
  4. Leinenkugel’s Berry Weiss
  5. Grolsch Blonde Lager
  6. Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock
  7. Samuel Adams Cream Stout
  8. Karl Strauss Amber Lager
  9. Anchor Porter
  10. Chelada Budweiser

As you might be able to tell from the beer lists, the watered down “ice” and “light” beers received a higher ranking because they have a fairly high alcohol content and are generally lower on calories.  The worst ranked beers are full of taste – usually sweetened or darker and thicker – but this comes at the cost of more calories which you’ll be able to feel if you’ve had more than one porter or stout in one sitting.  Of course, non-alcoholic beers are listed as the very worst because of their almost non-existent alcohol percentage even though they have some of the lowest calories per serving on the list.  Ultimately you’ll have to make a compromise between what is good enough to drink as well as what is low enough on calories to not pop your shirt buttons.

Best Liquors by Calories from Alcohol

  1. Everclear
  2. Jose Cuervo Especial (Gold)
  3. Jose Cuervo Especial (Silver)
  4. Crown Royal Special Reserve
  5. Gordon’s London Dry Gin
  6. Knob Creek Bourbon
  7. Don Julio Blanco Tequila
  8. Ketel One Vodka
  9. Absolut Vodka
  10. Stolichnaya Vodka

Worst Liquors by Calories from Alcohol

  1. Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur
  2. Mike’s Hard Lemonade
  3. Creme de menthe
  4. Midori
  5. Limoncello
  6. HRD Peach Schnapps
  7. HRD Root Beer Schnapps
  8. Mike’s Lite Hard Lemonade
  9. Hornsby’s Hard Apple Cider
  10. Parrot Bay Caribbean Coconut Rum

Of course, don’t ever drink Everclear by itself.  You don’t want to know what 95% alcohol feels like doing down the throat (hint: like hot nails with a side of alcohol poisoning).  As you’ll be able to tell, the best liquors have a very high alcohol percentage and are sometimes “mixed.”  The worst liquors for your love handles have a much lower alcohol percentage and are already mixed with dozens of fruity flavors and a ton of sugar.  Now you can convince your gal that Mike’s Hard is not a better choice than good old tequila.
